Current Penn State Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Researchers

  • Sasmita Sahoo (Postdoc) received her PhD from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, West Bengal, India, and has been working on modeling groundwater storage using machine learning methods.
  • Beth Hoagland (PhD candidate) comes from Washington University with a BS in Earth and Planetary Sciences. She is combining DTS and stream chemistry measurements to describe stream and groundwater exchange processes. Beth will also be using isotopic methods to quantify heavy metal transport and reactions downstream of a gold mine in Papua New Guinea.
  • Kalle Jahn (PhD student) comes from Williams College with a BA in Geosciences. He will use physical and geochemical modeling to assess the impacts of agricultural intensification on water resources in Brazil and Colombia.
  • Joel Roop-Eckart (MS student) comes from Columbus State University. Co-advised by Klaus Keller, Joel will address a hydro-climate decision problem using physical and statistical modeling of the hydrologic and climate system, while accounting for economic and possible socio-political risk factors.
  • Callum Wayman (MS student) comes from Purdue University with a BS in Multidisciplinary Engineering. He will be working at the Critical Zone Observatory, assessing the stream concentration and solute discharge relationships at an agricultural site, and using hydrologic, lithology, and land use data to model geochemical transport over the larger Shaver's Creek watershed.

  • Former Graduate Students

  • Jennifer Estrada (MS student; Co-advised by Matt Fantle) used calcium isotopes and a reactive transport hydrologic model to quantify fractionation and flow dynamics into a salar in the Atacama Desert.
  • Curtis Kennedy (MS student) used traditional hydrologic and geophysical field methods to quantify the relative contributions of local and regional groundwater at an agricultural site on karst.
